Club Meeting November 20th

There will be a club meeting on November 20th at 7:30pm at the headquarters in Georgetown. We will be nominating and electing officers for Club offices - President, Vice-president, Secretary and Treasurer. Please call me at 513-313-6012 if you are interested or if you know someone that would be a good nominee.

I also want to thank everyone for all of their HARD WORK!!!! It takes a team to do what we did in Brown County. As you can see from Mark's post below this one we did not fair too bad in Brown County. And, there is still one race that will be decided by Provisional ballets around the 20th of November. All of our candidates worked very hard and even if they did not get the seat this time I am proud to stand beside them and say we are Republicans for a Reason (As Paul would say).

We need to start today to rally together and make a difference in 2010. I look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting on Thursday, November 20th @ 7:30pm. Please do not hesitate to call with any questions. My contact number is 513-313-6012.

As most of you know, Obama won the Presidency last night. The Republicans lost, even though Brown County turned out for McCain. Also, congratulations to Jean Schmidt, Connie Patrick, Judges Hendrickson and Ringland,Danny Bubp, Tom Niehaus, Scott Gusweiler, Jessica Little, Tina Meranda, and Amy DeClaire, and Dwayne Wenninger for their victories and helping us to gain some offices we haven't had in a long time, as well as holding some offices we have had.

To all of you who were candidates, you fought the good fight. You stayed above board, you didn't engage in the smear mongering and innuendo that your opponents often engaged in. To all who volunteered, knocked on doors, stood at poll places; THANK YOU! It is people like you all who make Brown County and America great.

Over the next two years, we have a lot of work to do. I think we can take from this election that we in the Republican party have not convinced the people that we have found our way out of the "go along to get along" and "new tone" nonsense. We have not convinced them yet that we have returned to our core principles of limited government, strong defense, and fiscal conservatism. Over the next two years, let us come together, regardless of personal issues or past kerflubbles, and work to restore the faith in our party and get back to the blueprint that produced the greatest era in our history, the 1980s.

However, let us not look to the same national and state leadership, for much of that leadership has led us to our current state, both nationally and in our state. While we acknowledge their contributions, the time has come for a renaissance, not of new core values, but a new faith in those core values, with new leaders and new ideas to get out the message of core principles. Our national and state party leaders failed conservative ideals, the ideals did not fail them.

Come, let us work together. The task is hard but necessary. The time is grave but not unsalvageable. Let us work to restore ourselves. After all, there is some hope. California, OF ALL PLACES, passed an amendment protecting marriage. That should show us that the American people have not left the center/right area. They just don't know where our party stands. Let us work to show them. God bless one and all and God bless America!

Sincerely,

Mark E. Garbett, Jr. Scott Township and Communications Director

Congresswoman Jean Schmidt Event 10-20-08

Below you find some pictures from Congresswoman Jean Schmidt's event at the Brown County Republican Headquarters on 10/20/08. The event turned out very nice with around 40 people in attendance. The Congresswoman is doing remarkably well since her accident. With a broken vertebrae and 2 cracked ribs she is still going strong trying to keep up with her schedule. Please continue to keep her in your prayers as she continues to heal.

Thank you to all that came out and helped make it a successful event!!!! See ya at the poles!

Obama and the Myth of Cutting Taxes on 95% of Americans...40% don't even pay income taxes

Instead of telling voters to just give praise to the Beloved Leader, the Obamessiah, John McCain should be nailing Obama on his lie of a tax cut to 95% of Americans. It isn't even that hard John. The WSJ did the heavy lifting, with like charts and graphs and stuff:

One of Barack Obama's most potent campaign claims is that he'll cut taxes for no less than 95% of "working families." He's even promising to cut taxes enough that the government's tax share of GDP will be no more than 18.2% -- which is lower than it is today.

It's a clever pitch, because it lets him pose as a middle-class tax cutter while disguising that he's also proposing one of the largest tax increases ever on the other 5%. But how does he conjure this miracle, especially since more than a third of all Americans already pay no income taxes at all? There are several sleights of hand, but the most creative is to redefine the meaning of "tax cut." ...

Mr. Obama is proposing to create or expand no fewer than seven [tax] credits for individuals:

A $500 tax credit ($1,000 a couple) to "make work pay" that phases out at income of $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 per couple.
A $4,000 tax credit for college tuition.
A 10% mortgage interest tax credit (on top of the existing mortgage interest deduction and other housing subsidies).
A "savings" tax credit of 50% up to $1,000.
An expansion of the earned-income tax credit that would allow single workers to receive as much as $555 a year, up from $175 now, and give these workers up to $1,110 if they are paying child support.
A child care credit of 50% up to $6,000 of expenses a year.
A "clean car" tax credit of up to $7,000 on the purchase of certain vehicles.
Here's the political catch. All but the clean car credit would be "refundable," which is Washington-speak for the fact that you can receive these checks even if you have no income-tax liability. In other words, they are an income transfer -- a federal check -- from taxpayers to nontaxpayers. ...

In other words, the beloved leader will send you a check, even if you don't pay taxes. You will love him because he gives you free money. Praise be to the beloved one! However, don't dare earn any more money than your lowpaying job, because here is what will happen to you if you do:

Because Mr. Obama's tax credits are phased out as incomes rise, they impose a huge "marginal" tax rate increase on low-income workers. The marginal tax rate refers to the rate on the next dollar of income earned. As the nearby chart illustrates, the marginal rate for millions of low- and middle-income workers would spike as they earn more income. ...

So, if you get a promotion, if you do well at your job and get a raise, if you do well and earn more money, you will get a HUGE tax increase (see chart in article)

The article concludes with one of among many questions I have for the McCain Shampaign:

One mystery -- among many -- of the McCain campaign is why it has allowed Mr. Obama's 95% illusion to go unanswered.

Award Winning Economists Oppose Obama's Backward Economic Agenda

They just don't add up. Logical economists can see that. Why can't the American voter? Could it be the pander express? Could it be the smoke and mirrors of the 95% will see a tax cut mythology? Could be:

Hundreds of economists (including Nobel Prize winners Gary Becker, James Buchanan, Robert Mundell, Edward Prescott, and Vernon Smith) have signed letters opposing Barack Obama's economic and tax plans (here, here, and here):

We are equally concerned with his proposals to increase tax rates on labor income and investment. His dividend and capital gains tax increases would reduce investment and cut into the savings of millions of Americans. His proposals to increase income and payroll tax rates would discourage the formation and expansion of small businesses and reduce employment and take-home pay, as would his mandates on firms to provide expensive health insurance.

After hearing such economic criticism of his proposals, Barack Obama has apparently suggested to some people that he might postpone his tax increases, perhaps to 2010. But it is a mistake to think that postponing such tax increases would prevent their harmful effect on the economy today. The prospect of such tax rate increases in 2010 is already a drag on the economy. Businesses considering whether to hire workers today and expand their operations have time horizons longer than a year or two, so the prospect of higher taxes starting in 2009 or 2010 reduces hiring and investment in 2008.

Barack Obama's Tax Plan Will Kill Small Business in Ohio and the Country

Barack Obama's pitch is that he is a different, moderate Democrat who will cut taxes for 95% of Americans and will help small business. Well, since 40% of Americans don't pay income taxes and we further dismantled his tax plan earlier, let's get to the second part about small business. Patterico has an article that examines Obama and small business and finds the One to be wanting when it comes to friendliness to small business:

At tonight’s Town Hall Presidential debate, I think Barack Obama said this about his tax policies [EDIT: according to the CNN transcript]:

“Only a few percent of small businesses make more than $250,000 a year. So the vast majority of small businesses would get a tax cut under my plan.”

The US Small Business Administration (SBA) defines a “small business” according to its average annual receipts or the number of its employees. Here are examples from the SBA’s Table of Small Business Size Standards setting forth the maximum average annual receipts by industry that a business can have and still be classified as a small business:

Crop production of all types — $750,000
Animal production except for cattle & chicken/eggs — $750,000
Cattle feedlots — $2.5M
Chicken/egg production — $12.5M
Forestry & logging — $7M
Fishing — $4M
Irrigation, sewage, water supplies — $7M
Housing construction — $33.5M
Heavy and civil engineering construction — $33.5M
Dredging and cleanup — $20M
Concrete, framing, and other housing contractors — $14M
Car dealers — $23-29M
RV, motorcycle, & boat dealers — $7M
Furniture, hardware, clothing & sporting good stores — $7M
Electronic stores — $9M
Supermarkets, gas stations & department stores — $27M
Pharmacies — $7M

There are many more examples at the link. In addition, most of the industries in the Table — such as manufacturers of food, beverages, apparel, print, oil/gas, plastics, plumbing, machinery, computers, electronics, electrical, transportation, and furniture — are considered small businesses based on their total number of employees instead of average annual receipts. In those industries, the cut-off between small and large businesses ranges from 500-1,000 employees per business/industry.

It’s difficult for me to imagine a business that has 50 or more employees (let alone 500-1,000) that has receipts of less than $250,000 per year. And, given the SBA definitions of “small business,” it seems likely that many small businesses in a wide range of industries have receipts of more than $250,000 per year.

If so, it is appalling that Obama would imply that, if he is President, a small percentage of businesses exceed the $250,000 per year cut-off for increased taxation under his tax plan. In fact, the number of businesses subject to additional tax may be large and could well be the 50% number I think John McCain mentioned.

Yes, Obama is playing the numbers game, trusting that Americans will not put his math to the test. I hope and pray more Americans look at this and see it for the illusion, lie, and cannard that it is. Obama is going to raise taxes, and it didn't take the plumber confronting him to convince me of that. Look at all the debt he is going to add, over 1 trillion in NEW debt. How is he going to pay for it? Come on now. Look at the facts, figures, and figure it out. Obama is bad for America.

Our thoughts and Prayers are with Steve (central committee person and the party treasurer) and the entire Loehrke family at the tragic loss of daughter Christina, who was so tragically taken from us Tuesday night. Christina was a Sergeant serving at Ft. Bragg.

God be with Steve and his family, and with all those who knew Christina....

She was the 1997 valedictorian at Western Brown High School...

When Did the Brown County Press Become the Pravda of the County Democrat Party?

The Brown County Press has had some interesting letters to the editor. Rather, the way the editors have chosen to title these letters has been interesting and has provoked discussion about the newfound political bias of the Brown County Press, especially since the time Mr. Large has been the Editor in Chief.

Two weeks ago, an issue of the Press had three letters criticizing Democrat officials. The headlines were not complimentary to the writers and made it sound like children calling names...for example:
"Reader Throws Governor Under the Bus"
"Reader Criticizes Obama"
"Reader Throws Darts at County Prosecutor and Courts"

What do these three headlines have in common? All paint the Democrat officials being criticized as victims.

Of course, criticizing Obama is very tame, but throwing darts at Prosecutor sounds like the person is just taking shots...and throwing someone under the bus usually means that the person being criticized has done nothing and is taking all the blame for someone else's work. But what is funny is that the letters were very well reasoned and not rants. So, then, why portray them as such? Does Editor Large have an agenda?

Well, for further edification, I would like to take you back to the time when the Brown County GOP was having its Lincoln Day and the Democrats were doing their thing. The Press did not even mention most of our candidates running for office at the time, while not only did they mention every Democrat running for county office, they also printed their picture. Does that sound like "fair and balanced" reporting to you?

And where was their coverage of former Democrat commissioner Kirby Cornett getting into trouble? Buried....and when people criticized the lack of charges being filed, they were "throwing darts" or "complaining." Sounds like a whitewash to me....

Then of course, there is the way that in the 06 race for commissioner the Press did something it NEVER does. It printed an unsigned letter to the editor endorsing Margery Paeltz over Rick Eagan. The way it was cropped and placed, it looked like the paper was endorsing Paeltz, which they say they weren't doing in the race. Rick Eagan, in the very same paper, paid for a full page ad, while Margery Paeltz basically got a free ad. Again, does this sound "down the middle?"

I think the Georgetown paper should change its name and let the Press live up to its slants in coverage and go by the name Democrat.

In Ted Strickland's Ohio, Our Children are Second Class Citizens

Funny, I thought liberals cared about children with special needs. I thought Ted Strickland was going to do something about education. Well, he has. Actually, his education department has screwed over thousands of children with special needs in the state of Ohio. What am I talking about? The Dispatch has the story:

As state-mandated testing of third- through eighth-graders kicks into high gear this week, a widespread shortage of test forms used by a select group of students has some districts scrambling.

Marysville is among them. The Union County district had ordered test booklets for special-education students and English-as-a-second-language students who need to have the test read to them. The booklets never came.

Although testing began yesterday for everyone else at Marysville Middle School, those students had to wait.

They are hardly alone. The shortage affected about 450 districts, the Ohio Department of Education said.

Substitutes hired as test readers had to be called off, arrangements for special testing sites had to be canceled and plans had to be adjusted to occupy those students who couldn't take the test.

Officials don't know what happened, but it seems to have been a combination of errors, said Stan Heffner, the state's associate superintendent of curriculum and assessment.

Some districts simply didn't order enough, perhaps because of unclear instructions. Others, based on past numbers, seemed to have overordered and the Education Department erroneously lowered numbers on its own, he said.

Heffner said 20,000 special test forms were printed. It appears 60,000 were needed.

"We are doing everything we can to fix this," he said. "I can assure you we will make everything clear so that we don't have this problem again."

Why do I care? Because it affected me and my kids. I am currently serving out an internship in a middle school in SW Ohio. I am working with some wonderful children with learning disabilities in the 8th grade. My supervising teacher and I have been working very hard to get them ready and pumped up for the test. They showed up this past Monday ready and psyched about the test, only to find that probably another functionary of his Tedness screwed up again....first they lose our identity data, now they discriminate against thousands of children....the state really takes care of us, now, doesn't it?

These kids, when told, of course said, cool, the whole school is not taking tests. Then we had to tell them, no, just you. This immediately made them feel like lower class citizens. So, we didn't have enough tests. This should take high priority, right? Nope, it will be at least a week, and we may not even have the tests Monday. So, the regular ed kids will have to stay in the boring lockdown test taking posture this week as well as this past one, and many are holding it against our kids. Some ignorant teachers in the building are blaming us for this. Nope, blame Taxin'T-Shirt Ted and his party of frat boy harassers, who are more concerned with getting some play fro underlings than in doing their jobs (yes, that was a Marc "I will not answer the do I do it with my sox on question" Dann reference).

When we thought of an alternate solution, the lovely bureaucracy at the state told us no. So, we are left with kids who were ready, and now are so down that they are being singled out, along with a population of regular ed students mad at them and jealous because we had a "free" week (three hours of review time a day is not free) and who have been made to feel like no one cares, and who are probably going to bomb the test. But will this be factored in when the geniuses under Tave Zelman and T-shirt Ted print results? Hell no.

Some parent should sue. I really think so. This is a patent case of discrimination based on a disability.

But of course, the state doesn't know what the left is doing from the right. At the school where I am interning, the director of special services had taken questions from teachers about the "new" rules for the test. So she called the state department in charge of testing...."oh, well if it deals with special eduation, you need to talk to those folks." Well, she called the state department in charge of special education, and the person said, "well, first of all, this is a testing issue, so you should talk to them." When it was relayed that they referred us to them, and we had questions about IEPs, the person IN CHARGE OF THE DEPARTMENT said "well, I don't think I even know what an IEP is, much less how to help you."

OK, stop right there. For those of you not in the know, in special education students who get services have Individualized Educational Plans, or IEPs. This is a FEDERAL MANDATE. Every student who gets special education must have an IEP. Way back when I was getting my initial certification, ALL teachers were required to take one class dealing with the IEP. And the head of the section of the state department of ed dealing with special education doesn't know what one is? Come on now.

I have verified this story because the local director of special services saved it to her machine and played it at a regional conference later to show the stupidity of those who claim to be looking out for the children.....

So, we have a department that doesn't know what they should know, and these same people are making judgements in Columbus for the boots on the ground and who gets screwed???? The kids....Thanks Ted....and by the way, keep on pulling all that state funding from schools and funnelling it into the social programs....it is paying dividends....but not the good kind....

Ted Strickland and the Ohio Democrats believe in the three I's:
Ineptitude, Incompetence, and Indecency (Marc Dann's Specialty)...
but apparently don't know federal law....like IEPs....

Hey Ted, didn't you like serve in DC at some time? And I don't recall screwups this big happening when Republicans were in control....

Let's review: Brunner wants to run an election gestapo of intimidation, while voting irregularities only have increased,Teddy's staff can't keep our identity info safe,
Marc Dann can't keep office staff or state vehicles safe, and DICK Cordray wants all our driver money put in his name....and the state faces record deficits and screws our kids six ways to Sunday to pay for pet programs of theirs....love that new direction....

In Ted Strickland's Ohio, if your child has special education or learning disabilities, they just have to wait at the back of the bus.....

Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann: Ohio's Own Eliot Spitzer?

Excuse the shameless plug for the site I write for, Weapons of Mass Discussion, but there has been a lot of news going on about Ohio's Attorney General Marc Dann, who seems to be in the middle of a Spitzer-esque controversy. He has hired people who have problems with drinking and harassing women, and lawsuits have been filed.

I wonder where Democrat governor Ted Strickland is, he who is the head of our state who is a fellow Democrat, and who ran about ethics. Anyone remember the way Marc Dann and Strickland hammered Republicans about Tom Noe? Well, what does Strickland say about Dann's conflict of interest issues and his mishandling of these situations? Cricket, cricket....

And our media....papers owned by Cox newspapers and even the Cincinnati Enquirer, mention only the story but do not divulge that Dann is a Democrat. However, if Dann or Strickland is talking about busting a polluter, they get hailed as democrats. Another case of patent media hypocrisy by the media, and another example of the true corruption and underbelly of the Democrat party. I call upon the Ohio Democrat party to call for Marc Dann's resignation....

Note to Candidates

Please see to it your signs are removed, as the election is over. All signs should be removed by now. If you have not had your supporters or yourself remove the signs, please see to it that they are removed as soon as possible. Also, if you see a Tom Brinkman sign, please remove it and then contact Mr. Brinkman to let him know you have his signs. For some reason, he has not made much of an effort to collect them in the 2nd congressional district.

Thank you,

Ohio GOP: 88 in 08 Campaign

From our Friends at the Ohio GOP:
“As Ohio goes, so goes the nation.”

With those words, Hillary Clinton kicked off her primary night victory speech from Ohio’s capital city this week.

For once, we agree with Senator Clinton. No Republican has ever won the White House without winning Ohio. So to win the presidency, Democrats know they have to win here first.

That’s why we created a new program called 88 in 08. We’re asking loyal supporters such as you to contribute $88 (one dollar for each Ohio county) to help us build a statewide, grassroots organization in each of Ohio’s 88 counties.

Here’s what a single $88 contribution can do (based on statewide calculations):

    226 Absentee Ballot Request Forms
    1760 GOTV phone calls
31 new voters that can be identified and registered
    117 yard signs
    880 bumper stickers

These tools are critical to getting out the Republican vote this fall, and they’ll help us establish a solid 88 county political strategy that will keep Ohio Republican.

In fact, every dollar raised from your county will be used to benefit Republican candidates right there in your county. So your generous contribution of $88 or $176 or more will help us defeat the Democrats right at your front door.

We know the democrats are giving out the wazoo and we know all sorts of outside leftist groups will be funnelling money into Ohio, so we need to begin getting mobilized. This might be a good first step.

Breaking News: Terrorism in New York Again

Thank Goodness no one was hurt. However, it does underscore the fact that Homeland Security and National Defense issues should still be paramount in the age we live in.
    From Fox News:

DEVELOPING STORY — An explosive device caused minor damage to an empty military recruiting station in Times Square early Thursday, shaking guests in hotel rooms high above.

Police blocked off the area to investigate the explosion, which occurred at about 3:45 a.m., shattering the station's glass entryway. No one was injured.

"If it is something that's directed toward American troops than it's something that's taken very seriously and is pretty unfortunate," said Army Capt. Charlie Jaquillard, who is the commander of Army recruiting in Manhattan.

He said no one was inside the station, where the Marines, Air Force and Navy also recruit.

Witnesses staying at a Marriott hotel four blocks away said they could feel the building shake with the blast.

"I was up on the 44th floor and I could feel it. It was a big bang," said Darla Peck, 25, of Portland, Oregon.

"It shook the building. I thought it could have been thunder, but I looked down and there was a massive plume of smoke so I knew it was an explosion," said Terry Leighton, 48, of London, who was staying on the 21st floor of the Marriot.

Members of the police department's bomb squad and fire officials gathered outside the station in the early morning darkness, and police cars and yellow tape blocked drivers — most of them behind the wheels of taxicabs — from entering one of the world's busiest crossroads. Police began allowing some traffic through around the start of rush hour.

Though subway cars passed through the Times Square station without stopping in the early hours of the investigation, normal service was soon restored, with some delays.

The recruiting station, located on a traffic island surrounded by Broadway theaters and chain restaurants, has occasionally been the site of anti-war demonstrations, ranging from silent vigils to loud rallies.

Thanks to all with the courage to put your name on the ballot and run the race, and thanks to all the voters. I personally would like to thank those who voted for me and look forward to continuing to work for them and for all of Brown County on the Central Committee.

This Central Committee has accomplished a lot. We have developed an endorsement process, we have worked hard to upgrade our fair booth, and we have revamped the website. We will continue to work hard for you, the voters of Brown County.

    God bless America, our state, and our county; and all the men and women in uniform;

Get Out The Vote!!! Then Let's Come Together..

Friends, in a few short hours the polls will be open. Thousands of us will go out and cast a ballot in our county. I urge all of us to go out and vote for the Republican candidates of our choice in the primary. In the contested primaries, we have some very strong candidates and some tough decisions to make. This is the culmination of what many people have been working for over the past few months. Be thoughtful in your vote and consider who you think the best person for the job is going to be.

Then, once the votes are counted, let's come together as Republicans in this county and work hard for another "Clean Sweep" like we did in 2004. We have shown we can do it in the past, and we can do it again. After the ballots are counted and our candidates are known, let's take a few days to decompress, to let heal any wounds there might be, and then let's come together and fight for a Republican victory in November!

We have hard work in the coming months, with lots of outside groups and organizations funneling money to the other side, but with our unified talents and strengths, we can overcome. Yes we can.

God bless you all and God bless America,

    Mark Garbett, Communications Director

Our Secretary of State Brunner is A Bully....Typical Democrat...

via an email sent by the state GOP:

Ohio Republican Party Deputy Chairman Kevin DeWine today released the following statement regarding Secretary of State Brunner's rejection of the Summit County GOP Nominee for the Board of Elections:

"Jennifer Brunner's partisan manipulation threatens to undermine the integrity of Ohio's election system. She has rejected officials based entirely on hearsay and has refused to give them a fair hearing after accusing them of bullying and intimidation," said DeWine. "If this is the criteria for dismissal, perhaps she should consider removing herself from office, since her record of bullying and intimidation is well known and well documented in the press."

The Akron Beacon Journal reported today that Brunner based her rejection of Mr. Daley, a Republican, on a previous editorial calling him a "bully" and on comments from Democrats that he intimidates people. (Stephanie Warsmith, "Coughlin Supporter Gets Spot on Board," Akron Beacon Journal, 3/1/08)

Recently, Brunner bullied the Hardin County Board of Elections to rescind a motion they had passed out of a concern for the cost of her proposals. The minutes of the Hardin County Board's meeting clearly indicate that she issued a threat of removal from the board to force compliance. Brunner then removed the Chairman for voting against rescission, despite his recorded statements that he would do everything needed to implement her directive. (Dan Robinson, "Crates Removed from Elections Board," Kenton Times, 2/22/08)

"These heavy-handed, undemocratic tactics have no place in what is supposed to be a bipartisan system to ensure free and fair elections. Jennifer Brunner's intolerance of dissent and her efforts to purge any board members expressing concern about her proposals are clearly violating the spirit of that system," said DeWine.

For several years, the Democrats tried to accuse Republican secretaries of state of trying to influence local elections and boards...with Brunner, we have solid evidence time and again....

    Prayers for the Jowers Family

The Brown County Republican Party Family has been hit hard lately. Back in December, Al Spiller had a stroke. We found out at Lincoln Day about Tina Meranda's tumor surgery. That same weekend, the Jowers family had a health issue. Michelle Jowers, our Republican Club vice president, was unable to attend Lincoln Day. She had higher priorities, namely her daughter DeAnna. DeAnna had surgery over the weekend. From reports, she is a trooper and is recovering OK. Please keep DeAnna and the entire Jowers family in your prayers.

    Next Club Meeting ....

The next Republican Club Meeting will be Thursday, April 3, at the Brown County Public Library in Georgetown at 7pm.

State Chair Bennett on Dem Debate

From State Party Chair Bob Bennett:

There's very little debate on what either Democrat would actually do as president: raise taxes, increase spending, and retreat on national security. While they quibble over who can raise taxes higher and further depress Ohio's economy, Republicans are focused on fiscal responsibility and keeping America safe. Senators Clinton and Obama plan to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on new healthcare bureaucracy when government has enough trouble processing our tax returns. They lack any credible plans to pay for these ill-conceived ideas that limit personal choices between patients and doctors.

"Their foolishness on trade is particularly striking because they ignore the fact that repealing NAFTA would drive up prices and cost thousands of jobs right here in Ohio, the fourth largest exporter of goods in the nation.

"Time and again, Senator Obama's grand rhetoric has not matched his meager record. His unwise and ill-considered foreign policy and his contorted positions on trade clearly show he is unprepared to lead this nation."

Deputy State Chair DeWine Responds to Dem Presidential Debate

    From the Ohio GOP:

Ohio Republican Party Deputy Chairman Kevin DeWine released the following statement regarding the Democrat debate from Cleveland:

"Not surprisingly this debate really offered nothing new. It's the same old argument between a handful of Democrats who believe the answer to every problem is more government. And not surprisingly we as Republicans believe that government is best that governs least.

"We all know that this election is going to be about more than just hope and a few feel-good speeches. It's about leadership, it's about experience and a record of getting things done for Ohio and for this nation.

"Take a look at what has happened here in Ohio. More than a year ago, Ohio elected a Democrat governor who promised to turn our state around. Yet today, unemployment remains high, we lead the nation in home foreclosures and we continue to lose thousands of jobs a year.

"This debate offered nothing more than the same failed policies.

"The people of this state deserve leadership that doesn't increase their obligation to government and extend its control of their lives. And that is the real debate of this election and we look forward to winning that debate this November."

    Lincoln Day Reflections

Let me give you the rundown on the Brown County GOP's Lincoln Day dinner, held February 23, 2008 at Southern Hills Joint Vocational School.

There were a few notable absences. Chairman Paul Hall was absent, because he was named Nationwide's agent of the year and was treating his office staff to a retreat. He did send along a letter and his best wishes. Michelle Jowers, Republican club Vice President, was also a no show. Tina Meranda, Clerk of Courts, we found out, underwent Cancer treatment and sent her best via her husband Seth who spoke on her behalf (prayers to Ms. Meranda and family). Tom Cunningham acted as Master of Ceremonies in place of Chairman Hall.

The event kicked off with a social hour.
MC Cunningham called us to order, and the Ripley ROTC color guard presented the colors as Bill Herdman led the pledge and Doug Green, Auditor, sang the National Anthem.

Jean Schmidt took the floor and gave a rundown on the FISA debacle and talked about how she was working for us and how we needed to come together. She reflected on her time as Congresswoman and said it was an honor to serve. She then introduced her predecessor in the 2nd Congressional district, and the keynote speaker, former OMB Director Rob Portman.

Portman remarked on how great it was to be home in Ohio, and how great it was to be home with the wife and kids. He reminisced about serving the 2nd district, and his family background. He discussed working with and against the Democrats. He talked about how low approval ratings are. He emphasized the need to get back to ideas and ideals. The main point of his speech, however, was a call to action. He wanted us to recommit ourselves to conservative principles. He talked about how the Republicans in Washington had lost their way, that we had become big spenders and that we lost our claim to being an ethical party. He called upon us to come together to restore those principles. He made an impassioned plea for us to get behind John McCain, despite differences. On issues of judges, taxes, and the war, McCain is far better than Obama. He revealed his plans to endorse McCain, as he did in that fateful event yesterday. He also talked about how Ohio was falling behind, and how we needed to turn it around. Rob concluded his remarks by talking about his new organization for Ohio, and thanked us for his support.

After the invocation by Pastor Carla Warren of the Georgetown United Methodist Church, dinner followed, and State Senate Majority Leader Tom Niehaus discussed state happenings. He talked about how the Ohio state republicans in the General Assembly were working to get things done for Ohio, rather than fall prey to partisan bickering. I for one, wish there were more partisan bickering and less go along to get along, but Sen. Niehaus has shown the ability to get things done in a positive way.

The candidates then introduced themselves briefly. Congresswoman Schmidt, Mr.Portman and Sen. Niehaus all excused themselves as they had to attend Adams County's event that same night.

Overall, it was our largest Lincoln Day event, and it shows that despite an uncertain national climate, the party is still strong in Brown county.
Ohio 88th District Rep. Danny Bubp, on active duty in Iraq, was given the John Donohoo Award for his work with the party, and my personal friend Albert Spiller was given the coveted Sequoia award for his lifetime of service to the party. Al was able to attend just a few months after suffering a stroke during Christmastime. He looked well and strong as, well, a sequoia. Congrats to both.

The evening closed with remarks by former radio show host (back before our county station became a crappy robo station)Bill Cornetet, who encouraged us to stand firm on our values, reminding us of examples of Lincoln and others who believed in the rightness of their ideas even when it was hard, and to not compromise those ideals and principles.

Many dollars were also raised in silent auction and raffles for the party, as handled by Bill Herdman, Roxanne Malone, and Steve Loehrke and many others.

Thanks go out to Georgetown Florists, Southern Hills JVS, Paul Hall and Associates, Amy Cunningham and Jeanne Glassmeyer and Mariah Votel, as well as RULH ROTC and Personal Touch Catering for making the event a great success.
Below is a transcript of Chairman Hall's letter :

    Dear Fellow Republicans,
I certainly want to thank you for attending our annual dinner. I hope you have a great meeting! I am sorry I could not be with you. This weekend is my 3rd"Amazing Race" staff retreat for Paul Hall and Associates Insurance Agency. my original plans were to return, however I recently received word that my agency was selected as the #1 service agency nationally, for Nationwide Enterprise. Since my staff makes this happen, Jill and I both felt it was important to spend the time iwth them.

The state of the Brown County Republican Party is good. We have continued to incrase the spread as the majority party. We currently have 3933 Republicans compared to 3282 democrats. A sign of growth is new leadership. In the past year, Tom Cunningham, Pam Layman, Bev Lamphier, and Steve Loerhke have accepted new offices. They will be working with our returning team of Greg Himes, Roxanne Malone, and Michelle Jowers.

In 2007 we remodeled our fair booth and worked several parades. We also worked to update voter information for 2008 in our Voter Vault program. This program was instrumental in Bush carrying Ohio in 2004. We have continued to update this political tool which helps us identify independent voters that tend to vote Republican.

In 2006 a decision was made to begin an endorsement process. It was determined that to receive an endorsement a candidate must receive a minimum of 65% of the central committee votes. Making this more difficult was the fact that this percentage also included those voting not to endorse. Each candidate was to ask for endorsement and the screening committee reviewed each applicant. The candidates appeared at our central committee meeting. After their presentation, the committee voted to endorse or not to endorse a particular candidate. The slate cards on your table list all our candiates and recognize those who received endorsement. I would like to thank Gary Frye chairman of the screening committee, and all of the central committee. We had over 90% attendance.

While 2007 was busy, we need your help in 2008. If we are going to hold our local races and hold Ohio as a Republican State, we need you. The next club meeting is Thursday, April 3, at Brown County library in Georgetown. We want you to help make 2008 as fun and exciting as 2004. Together we can.

    Republican for a reason,
    Paul
